BIOGRAPHY
Flautist and Educator
Gareth is an established performer on modern and historical flutes. Captivated by the enchanting and ethereal sound of the flute from an early age, Gareth began playing the flute at the age of 11 whilst growing up in North Wales. Undergraduate study took Gareth to the University of Birmingham where he studied for a joint honours degree in Music and German Studies. At this time he studied modern flute with Colin Liley and baroque flute with Katy Bircher. Later on, Gareth completed an MMus in performance on historical flutes at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, where he studied with leading exponents on early flutes, Rachel Brown, Annabel Knight and Wilbert Hazelzet and participate in coaching and numerous masterclasses with leading historical practitioners. Gareth is an enthusiastic performer and regularly performs with leading period instrument groups in the UK and Germany. He also performs on modern flute in a range of styles and genres.
Gareth can regularly be found performing with his own group, Ensemble Échos and as part of a duo with Hungarian harpsichordist, Róza Bene.
As well as being an accomplished performer, Gareth is an enthusiastic teacher and has a wealth of experience as both an instrumental and classroom teacher (see my teaching page for more information).
